The register

Direct from source

The Ministry of Public Works publishes an overview of registered contractors and service providers. The edition dated 30 September 2023 groups contractors into categories such as civil works, building works, building and civil works, painting works and earthmoving, plus other service providers including engineering and consultancy firms.[1]

Fact

Contractors must qualify with the Ministry of Public Works or the relevant authority before bidding on public works.[2]

Analysis

The 2023 register lists roughly a thousand entries, most based in Paramaribo and Wanica. Many are sole traders; a few hundred are incorporated companies (N.V.).

What the register does not tell you

Analysis
  • Capacity: fleet, workforce and financial standing are not shown.
  • Track record: past projects and references are not listed.
  • Current status: the register is a snapshot; companies may have changed or stopped trading.
  • Quality and HSE: certifications are not part of the listing.

Other places to look

Direct from source
  • Business association membership — the Vereniging Surinaams Bedrijfsleven (VSB) publishes its member list, which includes contractors, engineering consultancies and equipment firms.
  • Company disclosures — established firms publish capabilities and project lists, e.g. Caremco (asphalt and roads), FIRM Engineering (fuel terminals, bridges, mining infrastructure), SINTEC and ILACO (ISO 9001-certified engineering consultancies).
  • Tender results — awards on public tenders (GOV.SR) show who actually wins work.

A practical shortlisting approach

Our interpretation

Start from the register and association lists to define the universe, narrow by category and district, then verify three things directly: comparable completed projects, equipment and crew available in your timeframe, and documented HSE and quality systems. We record each step as a verification event so the shortlist shows what has actually been checked.

Suriname Partners imports registers as internal intelligence and does not publish every listed company. Profiles appear publicly once they carry substantive, sourced information.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official list of contractors in Suriname?
Yes. The Ministry of Public Works publishes an overview of registered contractors and service providers; the latest we found is dated 30 September 2023.[1]
Does registration mean a contractor is qualified for my project?
No. Registration is a precondition for public works, not evidence of capacity or track record. Verify references, equipment and HSE directly.
